What is a career as a drama therapist in health and social care?

Drama therapists are both clinicians and artists that draw on their knowledge of both theatre/drama and therapy to use performance arts as a medium for psychological therapy.  Clients are able to explore a wide variety of different issues and needs from autism and dementia to physical/sexual abuse and mental illness in an indirect way leading to positive psychological, emotional and social changes.

Entry routes and pay

To be a drama therapist, you will need a postgraduate qualification in drama therapy, accredited by the British Association of Drama Therapists. To apply for the postgraduate course, you will need to have a degree in a subject like drama, creative therapies or psychology. You might also be able to apply if you’ve got a degree in a related subject, like occupational therapy, nursing or social work.

A starting salary is typically £37,338 with the ability to progress up to £53,000 in senior roles.
