What is a career as an emergency medical technician in health and social care?

Is a crucial role proving emergency medical care by assessing, treating and managing patients and reducing the need to be admitted to hospital. This may be as a single responder to an incident or supporting a paramedic on a double-crewed ambulance.

You will be working as part of an ambulance crew responding to emergency and urgent calls, providing assistant and driving the ambulance.

There are opportunities to start this role as an apprenticeship. You will begin by undertaking an classroom based course followed by undertaking your apprenticeship by learning whilst out on the road responding to emergency calls as a valued member of the Trust’s frontline team.

You will be required to have English and Maths at level 2 and a full UK manual driving licence with a minimum of 1 years driving experience (maximum of 3 penalty points for minor motoring offences only)

To go into this role without the apprenticeship you will need to have:

  • BTEC level 3 in Ambulance Aid (or IHCD Ambulance Aid Award)
    OR
  • FREC level 5 in addition produce portfolio to demonstrate competencies in FREC levels 3 & 4

OR

  • FAQ Level 4 – Diploma for Associate Ambulance Practitioners

AND

  • Full UK driving licence with Full C1 category with 2 years driving experience (maximum of 3 penalty points for minor driving offences) (Maximum of 6 penalty points for SP30 offences)

AND

  • Emergency Response Driving Qualification

As a qualified Emergency Care Technician you will start on £26,530 and be able to progress to £29,114.

As an Apprentice during the 12-18 training period you will be paid under  Agenda for Change Annex 21 salary will apply; starting salary £19,317.20 per annum, but will be adjusted to meet National Living Wage of £21,313.45 per annum. Upon completion of the apprenticeship you’ll be able to progress to £26,530.
