What is a career as a pharmacy assistant in health and social care?

A pharmacy assistant provides customer service and support to pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. The role involves handling prescriptions, managing stock, and offering healthcare advice to customers.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Some key responsibilities include;

  • Assisting in preparing and labelling prescription medicines under the supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Helping customers choose over-the-counter medications and providing basic healthcare advice.
  • Collecting prescriptions from customers and inputting details into the system.
  • Ordering, storing, and restocking medicines and health products.
  • Following legal and ethical regulations regarding medicine handling and managing payments, keeping records, and answering customer inquiries.

Entry routes and pay

There are no set entry requirements but expect a good standards of English and Maths  and some may ask for qualifications such as GCSEs, NVQs or equivalent.

Depending on your employer, will depend how much you will earn. Typically a starting salary is about £23,000, with opportunities to increase with experience and further training and qualifications.
